y=x+1 has slope = 1
a perpendicular line has slope which is the negative inverse of 1, which is -1
(y- -5)/(x-1) = -1
or
(y+5)/(x-1) = -1 is the perpendicular line through the point (1,-5)
which is also
(y+5) = -(x-1)
y-y1 = m(x-x1) where m=slope and the point the line goes through is (x1,y1)
which is the same as y= -x -4 in slope intercept form
