the slope of a line is the coefficient of the x term, when the equation is solved for y
the slope of y=x+1 is 1. x has an implicit coefficient of 1
the slope of a perpendicular line is the negative inverse. change the sign. the slope of the perpendicular line is -1.
(y - - 5)/(x-1) = -1 or (y+5)/(x-1) =-1 or y+5 = -(x-1)
general standard form is y-k = m(x-h) where (h,k) is the point and m=slope
