# of Trumpet players = # of Sax players - 10
# of Sax players = 3 x # of Trumpet players
Use T and S to represent the # of different players.
So you have:
T = S - 10, and
S = 3T
Since S and 3T are the same (indicated by the equal sign), use "3T" in place of the "S" in
T = S - 10.
That gives you:
T = S -10 (BEFORE you substitute it in)
T = 3T - 10 (AFTER you make the substitute)
Now, you can solve for "T."
Once you know T, you can use that value in S = 3T to find the value of "S."
