The Maruyan Empire reached it's height under the rule Ashoka (approx 270–235 BCE). He was a great conqueror who unified much of what is modern India--a rare feat in premodern times. He was also a law giver, who was known for erecting pillars with his laws on them at various points in his empire. Ashoka also used Buddhism to unify his huge empire--transcending local differences--in a manner quite similar to the Roman use of Christianity many hundreds of years later in a different part of the world. He laid the ground work for the spread of Buddhism throughout Asia and for the trade networks that were key in the growth of the Silk Roads.
