Given the points (-4,0) and (0,2)
- First we need to find the slope m. We can use the formula y2-y1 = m(x1-x2)
- Plug in the x and y values. 2-0 = m(0 -[ -4]) =
2 = 4m
m = 1/2
Use y= mx + b where b is the y-intercept. The y-intercept is where x = 0. One of the
coordinates given x= 0 when y= 2. The y-intercept is 2.
Plug the y-intercept back into the y = mx + b formula, the final equations is y = 1/2x + 2.
The answer can be checked by plugging in either of the given point back in to the solved formula.
For instance to check the formula for points (0,2) and (-4,0),
Using (0,2), plug in x = 0 to see if y= 2. y = (1/2)*0 + 2 = 2. and
Using (-4,0), plug in x = -4 to see if y = 0 y = 1/2 *-4 + 2 = 0
Both of these checked out, therefore the answer y = 1/2x + 2. is correct
