switch x and y
f(y) = x
then solve for the new y
that's the inverse of f(x)
for example:
f(x) = y = x+2
switch x and y
x =y+2
solve for y
y=x-2
f^-1(x) = x-2 is the inverse function for f(x) =x+2
graphically, if you a point (x,y) is on the f(x) then (y,x) will be a point on f^-1(x)
the line y=x+2 reflected across the diagonal y=x will be the inverse y=x-2
(0,2) is on the first line and (2,0) is on the 2nd line, the inverse function.
