Spirometry and ventilation

Mark is a 50 year old, 5’3 tall male. He generates the following spirometry data during his respiratory lab: Expiratory reserve volume: 1200mL

Inspiratory reserve volume : 3150 mL

Tidal volume: 500mL

What is Mark's predicted vital capacity?

Josephine, the key to this question is understanding the definition of vital capacity. Any lung capacity is simply the sum of two or more lung volumes. Specifically, the vital capacity is the sum of all the lung volumes a person can use, (the residual volume is not counted in the vital capacity). So, in anyone, it is the sum of their expiratory reserve volume, inspiratory reserve volume, and tidal volume. For Mark, you can add the numbers given to you together and you'll have your answer!
