All functions have inverses. Not all inverses are functions. Do you know how to determine the inverse of a function?

Agreed. Hopefully the student can look up inverse functions in their text or online read about them, then apply the information. One must read the math.

Not all functions have an inverse unless it is one-to-one. y = x^2 is a function but it is not one-to-one. It must pass the vertical and horizontal line test to have an inverse. For things like y = x^2 that is a function but not one-to-one, restrictions are applied such as restricting the domain to x>=0. Or for y=sin(x) restricting it to domain from [-pi/2 , pi/2]
