Agree. I believe that "president" is meant to be "precedent," which does confuse the question a bit. However, precedent or "stare decisis" is crucial for the development of the law to continue in a manner that reflects society's ever-changing mores and norms. If we only had "black letter law" upon which to rely, then any time the judiciary wanted to deviate from or change the law, it would have to refer back to the legislative process. By using precent, jurists are able to make creative distinctions and arguments using both main tenants and dicta of previous case law.
