A person on the edge of a canal observes a tower on the other side with an angle of elevation of 12⁰ to the top of the tower and an angle of depression of 7⁰ to the bottom of the tower from eye level. The person’s eye level is 152 cm. Both sides of the canal are at the same level. What is the width of the canal and the height of the tower? (round 2 dp)

Draw and label a diagram. Draw a line from the eye of the person to the tower.

w represents the width of the canal

152 represents both the height of the person and the part of the tower below eye level

t represents the part of the tower above eye level

tan 7° = 152 / d

t / d = tan 12°

Once you determine t add 152 to answer the total height of the tower.
