Benedict's test is used to detect any presence of reducing sugars (e.g. aldehydes or ketones). Thus, the test cannot be used specifically for detection of glucose in the urine (glycosuria). It will create a false-positive result since other reducing sugars, such as lactose or fructose, and reducing compounds can be found in the urine. Further testing would be needed to distinguish glucose from other reducing sugars.
