A cruise boat traveled 96 miles​ downstream, with the​ current, in 4 hours. The return trip​ upstream, against the​ current, covered the same distance but took 12 hours. Find the average velocity of the current.

96 = 4(r+c)

96 = 12(r-c)

4r+4c = 12r -12c

r +c = 3r -3c

2r = 4c

r =2c

4(r+c) = 96

4(2c+c) = 96

12c = 96

c = 96/12 = 8 mph = average speed of the current

r =2c = 2(8) = 16 mph = speed of the boat in still water

24(4) = 96 miles

(16-8)(12) = 8(12) = 96 miles
