The French had a treaty with the Ottoman Empire on June 25th, 1802, after some conflict between the two powers. There was some concern for conflict, but the Ottomans were more concerned about fighting the Russians. With England they had helped established the Treaty of Canak. It stated that no warships would enter the Strait of Dardanelles and the Bosporus.
