Girls can be engineers too!
In wanting to identify the x and y intercepts, we must first understand what they mean.
- x intercept --> occurs when the line crosses over the x axis, when y = 0
- y intercept --> occurs when the line crosses over the y axis, when x = 0
In order to identify these intercepts, we simply plug in one of the above knowns and solve for the unknown:
- x intercept; y = 0 --> -5*x + 9*0 = -18 --> -5*x = -18 --> x = 18/5 --> x intercept: (18/5, 0)
- y intercept; x = 0 --> -5*0 + 9*y = -18 --> 9*y = -18 --> y = -18/9 = -2 --> y intercept: (0, -2)
