You can look up your expressions, they are quadratics, if the coefficient of x² in your equations is equal to zero then you cannot have a Quadratic

In the first one

x² - 2x - 3 = 0

According to ax² + bx +c

a = 1, b = -2 and c = -3

If a is ever equal to zero then you would not have a Quadratic

Set them equal to zero

Solve for x

x² - 2x - 3 = 0

(x - 3)(x + 1) = 0

x - 3 = 0

x = 3

x + 1 = 0

x = -1
