Math: Solving For x?

Ok, one is selling a service and charges $30 per hour. A new platform to sell the service will charge 20%. One would want to charge more to cover the 20% cost to maintain $30 per hour at the end of the transaction.

My non-mathematical mind says this: x - 20% = $30 (solve for x)

No deal because that equation comes out to $30.20. Reversing it $30.20 - 20% = 24.16. Obviously, $24.16 is not $30

Where did I go wrong?

Many many thanks, Pete. I will need to study this more in depth to understand it. I came to $37.50 manually by starting with “$40-20%=...” and walking it back to the correct answer “$39, $38, etc.” I appreciate your time. Thank you.

You are welcome Michael. Another easier way of looking at it is: 80% of what number is $30. .8X = 30 (80% = 80/100 = .8) “of” translates to multiplication “is” translates to the “=“ sign Then, divide both sides of the equation by .8, and you get $ 37.50.
