fear of a nuclear war between the two nations
A big reason we no longer see large-scale wars like that of the two World Wars is because of the prevalence of so many nuclear weapons. If a country with nuclear weapons attacked another country with nuclear weapons, the resulting nuclear war would cause catastrophic damage. The same thing happened in the Cold War: both nations, the USA and the Soviet Union, were afraid of the damage each could to do the other with their nuclear weapons.
