When you have a binomial:solve for x

1 2x^2=32

2 -x^2+36=0

3 5x^2-10=70

4 2x^2+4x=0

2x²= 32

x²= 32/2 = 16

x = √16 = √4² = ±4

2)

-x² +36 = 0

-x² = -36

x²=36

x²=√36 = √6² = ±6

3)

5x²-10 = 70

5x² = 70 + 10 = 80

x² = 80/5 = 16

x = √16 = √4² = ±4

4)

2x²+4x = 0

(2x²+4x)/2 = x²+2x = 0

Factor out x using the distributive property multiplication over addition

x(x+2) = 0

By the fundamental theorem of algebra, if x(x+2)= 0 then x=0 or (x+2) =0

x=0

x+2 = 0

x=-2

So this problem has two answers.

x = 0, -2

The first 3 problems are similar. Isolate the squared term, take the square root of both sides.

1) 2x²=32 Divide by 2

2x²/2=32/2 Simplify

x²=16 Take the square root of both sides

√x²=√16

x=±4 ( there are 2 solutions)

4) 2x²+4x=0 This one is different. You have to factor out the GCF, 2x

2x(x+2) = 0 Set each factor equal to zero and solve

2x=0 Divide both sides by 2

2x/2=0/2 Simplify

x=0

x+2=0 Subtract 2 from both sides.

x+2-2=0-2 Simplify

x=-2
