first step is conversion of mixed number to improper fraction:
1 4/9 = 1*9+4 / 9 = 13/9
2 6/9 = 2*9+6 / 9 = 24/9
add the fractions : 13/9 + 24/9
= 37/9
= 4 1/9 0r 4.11
