Question

A farm has chickens, horses, and fish. The 30 animals have 44 legs in total. The number of horses is only half the number of fish.

Create three equations.

Solve to find how many of each animal type there are.

C+ h+ f = 30 <-- 30 animals

44 legs among 30 animals:

2c + 4h = 44 ---> c + 2h = 22

f = 2h <--- twice as many fish as horses

substitutes equation 3:

c + h + 2h = 30

c + 3h = 30

the 2x2 system is:

c+ 3h = 30

c + 2h = 22

subtracts these equations:

h= 8

then c = 6

which forces f=16

h represents the number of horses

2h represents the number of fish

30 - 3h represents the number of chickens

2(30 - 3h) + 4h + 0(2h) = 44
