40/2.5 = 16 cookies for $40 at $2.50 each
use a calculator or
40/2.5 = 40/(2 1/2) = 40/(5/2) = 40(2/5) = 8(2) = 16
or 40/2.5 = 400/25 = 4(100)/25 = 4(100/25) = 4(4) = 16
or just do long division 25 goes into 40 once with remainder of 15
25 goes into 150 6 times, 16 with no remainder. Just keep track of
the decimal point.
If they cost $2 each you could buy 40/2 = 20
if they cost $3 each you could buy 40/3 = 13 1/3. For $2.50 it's
about half way between 13 and 20 or about 16
