The Domino Theory was the basis of U.S. foreign policy during the Cold War. According to the theory, if one country became communist, all other countries were at risk, including the United States. The theory stimulated the policy of Containment, which was the attempt to contain or keep Communism inside the Soviet Union’s sphere of influence. Some results of this theory were the Truman Doctrine, which gave military aid to countries “threatened” by the USSR, and eventually the Marshall Plan, which provided economic aid to Western European countries that were decimated by WWII economically. Truman believed if they continued to struggle they may also embrace communism.
