A weird Word question

A square rug has an inner square in the center. The side length of the inner square is x inches and the width of the outer region is 11 in. what's the area of the outer part of the rug.

Hard to say for sure what they are asking for, but my guess is that they are looking for what the area is of the outer rug that is showing.

The area for a square is the s^2, so you would probably want to find the area of the outer square and subtract the area of the inner square.

This is weirdly worded. My guess is that the outer part of the rug is 11 inches thick. Thus, the side length of the square rug is 11 + x + 11 = x + 22. Thus, the area of the rug is (x+22)² = x² + 44x + 484. So the area of the outer part of the rug is the area of the rug minus the area of the inner part of the rug:

x² + 44x + 484 - x² = 44x + 484
