5+5 = 10 in the decimal system
when the number system has base 10
But in base 6, 5+5 = 14,
in base 7, 5+5 = 13
in base 8, 5+5 = 12
base 9 5+5 = 11
base 10 5+5= 10
base 11 there would have to be another single digit after 9, call it X, then 5+5 = X
base 12 there would be another digit following 9 and X, call it Y, then 5+5 = still = X, but 5+6 = Y
You would not have a digit 5 in base 5 or less
in base 5, our base 10 number 5 would be 10 and 5+5 = 20
in base 4, our "5" would be 11, and 5+5 would be 11+11 = 22
they seem to teach other number systems in common core, maybe even in 5th grade, that probably causes parents more
problems & headaches than their kids.
other than the decimal system, the most commonly known number system is "binary"
with base 2.
in base 2, 5 translates to 101, that's 2^2 + 1 = 5
5x5 then= 2^3 + 2 = 101 x 101 = 1010
