Is this pattern linear, exponential, or quadratic?

  1. Here is a pattern of squares. S represents the number of small squares in the pattern as a function of n, the step number.

  1. Which expression could define S?
  2. 3n
  3. 2n
  4. n2+1
  5. n2+n

I believe this is a duplicate posting, but to carry my original comment over... There is no image to reference the "Here is a pattern of squares..." question. Without the pattern being viewable, identifying an expression is unlikely. However, the simplest approach would be to start by testing N=1,2,3,4 for each expression. This could allow you to quickly eliminate either the linear or quadratic expressions right away. If you repost with the image of the "patterns" we can provide a more direct answer.
