P = 9.99/(.8)= $12.49 if the sale is a 20% discount
BUT if the sale is tell to sell at 20%, not off but 20% of the original price then
9.99 = 20% of P
.2P = 9.99
P = 9.99/,2= 5(9.99} 5 cents less than $50 = $49.95 original price
Odds are you want the first answer though, $12.49, but the way it's written suggests $49.95. Had it been that way though, the store might have advertised 80% to get more customers.
