Pam made a floral arrangement. She used 6 roses and 6 green stems and her cost was

$27. Her friend made an arrangement as well using 3 roses and 8 green stems. Her

cost was $21. Write and solve a system of equations to find the cost of roses and green

stems.

6R + 6G = 27

3R + 8G = 21

multiply the 2nd equation by to and subtract the 1st from that

6R + 16G = 42

6R + 6G = 27 eliminating R

10G = 15

G = 15/10 = $1.50 for a green stem

plug that value back into either equation to solve for R

3R + 8(15/10) = 21

3R = 21-12= 9

R = 9/3 = $3 for a rose

check the answer by substituting those numbers into the 1st equation

6R + 6G = 27

6(3) + 6(15/10) = 27

18 + 9 = 27

27=27
