I don't have a ruler with me, but I would make a table of values and measure the area of a paper normally. Fold it in half and measure the area again, fold it into another half and measure the area again.. In the table of values, x would be folds, y would be area. You will notice that there is probably the area of is being divided by 2 everytime. If that is the case, the 90 could represent the original area of the paper (unfolded) and the person folded it in thirds, that is why you multiply the 1/3.
Test it out first to make sure the theory works.
