(4x5 - 3x3 + 2x2 - 7) - (x4 + 2x3 - 4x - 3)
1) Open up the parenthesis by distributing. First parenthesis stays as is. Second parenthesis distributes the negative immediately before it so positives become negative and negatives become positive.
4x5 - 3x3 + 2x2 - 7 - x4 - 2x3 + 4x + 3
2) Group like terms together. It is a like term if they have the same xn, where n is any number. Make sure to include the (+) or (-) before each term when you move it.
4x5 - x4 - 3x3 - 2x3 + 2x2 + 4x - 7 + 3
3) Combine like terms. Keep the xn but add or subtract the coefficients.
4x5 - x4 - 5x3 + 2x2 + 4x - 4
4) Double check your answers!
