(4x⁵ - 3x³ + 2x² - 7) - (x⁴ + 2x³ - 4x - 3)

1) Open up the parenthesis by distributing. First parenthesis stays as is. Second parenthesis distributes the negative immediately before it so positives become negative and negatives become positive.

4x⁵ - 3x³ + 2x² - 7 - x⁴ - 2x³ + 4x + 3

2) Group like terms together. It is a like term if they have the same xⁿ, where n is any number. Make sure to include the (+) or (-) before each term when you move it.

4x⁵ - x⁴ - 3x³ - 2x³ + 2x² + 4x - 7 + 3

3) Combine like terms. Keep the xⁿ but add or subtract the coefficients.

4x⁵ - x⁴ - 5x³ + 2x² + 4x - 4
