order of operations is PEMDAS, parentheses 1st, exponents 2nd, multiplication 3rd, division 4th, addition 5th, subtraction last
only operations involved in this problem are parentheses, addition, subtraction
do what's inside the parentheses first, -14+9 =-5, then add -5 to -6 to get -11
adding -5 to -6 is the same as subtracting 5 from -6. Start at -6, then go 5 lower to get -11
