When you have 2 equations with 2 variables, you can use one of them to help solve the other. In this case, we know x=y+2, so you can substitute y+2 for x in the first equation.
2(y+2) - y = -1
2y + 4 - y = -1
Solve for y, then plug that value in to either equation and solve for x.
