To fully answer this question one must first interpret the core tenets of Islam as a religion and how the teachings of this religion relate to architecture. Islam when related to architecture is rooted in the artistic elements of balance, unity, and transcendence. The visual elements of Islamic architecture include geometric patterns, calligraphy, intricate woodwork, unique tiling, and the use of single or double arches. The Roman influence comes from Roman mosaicists who most likely helped construct the Dome of the Rock. You can also see the Roman influence in the octagonal shape, the central plan of the building, and use of concrete. Byzantine architecture is often represented by large centralized domes, use of mosaic for decoration, Greek floor plans, and spacious areas for religious worship. The way all of these elements come together to make a statement about Islam is that it is a newly established religion for the time gaining traction and taking artistic inspiration from preexisting architectural canons that at the time were considered new and fresh.
