Let c = number of children and a = number of adults.
4c + 5.8a = 1313
c + a = 281 --> c = 281-a
Substitute for c in the first equation
4(281-a) + 5.8a = 1313
1124 - 4a + 5.8a = 1313
1.8a = 189
a = 189/1.8 = 105
c = 281-105 = 176
176 children and 105 adults were admitted.
