Let's use the variable, x , to represent one of the numbers and the variable, y , to represent the other number.
Then you can write two equations and two unknowns and solve them using elimination:
x + y = 10
x - y = 6
Now use elimination to find the value of x first:
x + y = 10
x - y = 6
2x = 16
2x/2 = 16/ 2
x = 8
Since the sum of the numbers is 10, y would be 2.
