the axis of symmetry means every point on the parabola on one side of the axis will be a mirror image of the other side of the parabola
If the parabola has x intercepts and the axis of symmetry is x=5, for example, each x intercept will be the same distance from that line, such as (2,0) and (8,0) 8-5 = 3 = 5-2
If the parabola is up or downward opening, the vertex will have the same x coordinate as the axis of symmetry
if the parabola is right or leftward opening, the vertex will have the same y coordinate as the axis of symmetry
if the axis of symmetry is x=0, then for every point on the parabola (x,y) there is another point on the parabola (-x,y) If (6,8) is a point on the parabola, so is (-6,8) the 2 points are equidistant to the axis of symmetry.
