Two Equation Word Problem

Question

One canned juice drink is 30% orange juice; another is 10% orange juice. How many liters of each should be mixed together in order to get 20L that is 16% orange juice.

How many liters of the 30% juice should be in the mixture?

How many liters of the 10% orange juice should be in the mixture?

Let x = # of liters of first canned drink of 30% orange juice.

Let y = # of liters of second canned drink of 10% orange juice.

 

0.16*20=0.3*x + 0.1*y

x+y=20

y=20-x, then substitute this into the first equation. 

So, 3.2=0.3*x + 0.1*(20-x)

3.2=0.16*20=0.3*x + 2 - 0.1*x

1.2=0.2*x

x=6 liters.

y=20-6=14 liters.
