(1/4)y + 3/8 = (1/4)[ y + (3/8)/(1/4)] = (1/4)[y + (3/8)(4)] = (1/4)(y+3/2)
check the answer and multiply 1/4 times y and 1/4 times 3/2 to get
(1/4)y + (1/4)(3/2) = (1/4)y + 3/8
When you write 1/4y, I assume you really meant (1/4)y. As written though 1/4y is 1/(4y)= (1/4)y^-1. then the variable is y^-1. but factoring out 1/4 still gets you a similar (1/4)(y^-1 + 3/2) just the exponent of y is -1 instead of an implicit +1
