to be parallel, the line must have the same slope, but a different y intercept. If it has the same y intercept, it's the same line
2 = m = the slope, the coefficient of the x term, when the equation is solved for y
y=mx+b is the standard equation in slope intercept form with b = y intercept
plug in the point to solve for b
4=2(3) + b
b = 4-6 = -2
the parallel line through the given point is y=2x -2
an error in doing this might be to use 1 as the y intercept, or to use the negative inverse of the slope which gives you a perpendicular line, not a parallel line
