A framed picture has a total area y, in square inches. The thickness of the frame is represented by x, in inches. The equation y = (8 + 2x)(10 + 2x) relates these two variables.

What are the length and width of the picture without the frame?

y is the total area which you are told is 224

(2x+8) and (2x+10) are the length and width so

224= (2x+8)(2x+10) now solve for x

224= 4x^2 +36x +80

4x^2 +36x-144=0. ( divide both sides by 4)

x^2+9x-36=0

(x+12)(x-3)=0 x= -12 or 3 Can discard -12 since you

cant have a negative distance

So dimensions are 2x+8= 14 and 2x+10=16
