Use the exponent "power of a power rule" to rewrite the left side as: x(12a-6). The exponents were multiplied.
So we have x(12a-6) = x18
If powers with the same base are equal the exponents must be equal.
12a-6 = 18
12a = 24
a = 2.
Substitute 2 for a in the original equation to check.
