30% of $40 = $12. $40-$12 = $28
the total discount off $100 was 72%
72% of $100 is $72. $100-$72 = $28 final discounted price, where you pay 28% of the original regular price
this all assumes that 30% discount is a discount off the discounted price and not a 2nd discount off the regular price. If you took 30% off $100 that's $30 off and $40-$30 would leave a final discounted price of $10 which is 10% of the original price
