The ratio of lemon juice to water in a lemonade recipe is 1:4. How mnay cups of should you add if added 3 cups of lemon juice if you are using the recipe.

Ratios are simply evaluating FRACTIONS. The fractions are equalized so you can find an unknown value....so for your example we have.....
1/4 = 3/x..............you need to find the x value that makes the ratio true. Or makes the equation true.
so.....you could cross multiply and you have.......x = 3*4 = 12........now check your calculations....
1 cup of lemon juice to 4 cups of waters is the same as
3 cup of lemon juice to 12 cups of water. Another way would be to duplicate the original recipe 3 times you have....
1:4........lemon:water
1:4........lemon:water
1:4........lemon:water...................add all that together you have 3:12.....
3 lemon:12 cups of water..........Right?
