Four runners start at the same point; Lin, Elena, Diego, Andre. For each runner write a multiplication equation that describes their journey.

1. Lin runs for 25 seconds at 8.2 meters per second. What is her finish point?

 

1. Elena runs for 28 seconds and finishes at 250 meters. What is her velocity?

 

1. Diego runs for 32 seconds at -8.1 meters per second. What is his finish point?
2. Andre runs for 35 seconds and finishes at -285 meters. What is his velocity?

Answer 1

distance location = velocity speed * time elapsed

Lin: distance location = 8.2 m/sec * 25 sec = 205 meters

(past the starting point)

Elena: 250 meters = ? * 28 sec

? = 250/28 = 125/14 = 8 + 13/14 m/sec

Diego: distance location = -8.1 m/sec * 32 sec = -259.2 meters

(behind the starting point)

Andre: -285 = ? * 35

? = -285/35 = -57/7 = -8 + 1/7 meters per sec (backwards)
