A 7 foot person is sitting in a chair that is 23 inches tall, how tall is the person now after sitting in the chair, the chair has a straight back.

This question does not have a precise answer. Essentially, the length of the legs, up to the midline of the glutes, has been supplanted by the 23" chair seat height. But individuals differ, perhaps by as much as 15%, in the proportion of their legs' to their torso's length, so you can only estimate as ~ 3'6" (the torso+head) + 23".

In basic measurement of an adult, the average is 'eight heads high'. If the subject is 7 feet tall, that would make them 84 inches. (7 x 12).The lower part of the body makes up half of the height. However the subject is seated, which means the thigh area are not part of the total height. The subject would be considered at least "one and a half heads short'. When calculating this the original height would be divided and then recalculated without this additional footage. ie: (7ft x 12in.) - (1.5ft x 12in) = 84 - 18in = 66in = 5.5ft. Of course this is an approximation due to every individual is slightly different and the consideration of the fat and muscle in the buttock must be accounted for. With this in mind, not withstanding the height of the chair, the subject would be around 5.5ft give or take a few inches depending on leg length, torso height and of course the size of the head itself. I do realize the chair is only 23in but it does not state that that is the leg height of the chair. This answer could vary depending on this information from a visual point of view.

Depending on the source, it is also possible this is a trick question. If height means "the distance from the ground to the top of your head," then the question is unanswerable, for the reasons stated in the other response. But I would say that this is not what height means. Height refers to the distance from your feet to the top of your head when you are standing. Therefore, a 7 foot tall person is STILL 7 feet tall, regardless of whether they are sitting, lying down, curled up, etc.
