7.75 feet is left
10 = 10.00. subtract
2.25
5 from 10 = 5 for the hundredths digit
2 from 9 = 7 for the tenths digit
9-2 = 7 for the one's digit
leaving 7.75 as the answer
you have to "borrow" a 1 from the preceding digit, as you want a positive solution. 0-5 = -5, so you borrow a 1 from next door and subtract 5 from 10 to get 5. If you take a 1 from the tens digit, that leaves 9, as you "borrow" again a 1 from the ones digit. 9-2 = 7. that leaves 9 in the ones' digit, so you subtract 9-2 = 7/
check your answer, add 7.75 to 2.25 and it sums to 10
Or you could have done this problem by converting to fractions. 2.25 = 2 1/4 = 9/4
10 = 40/4. 40/4 minus 9/4 = (40-9)/4 = 31/4 = 7 3/4 = 7.75
Another way to check the answer is use the "rule of nines"
add up the digits: treat 10 as 1+0 = 1
treat 2.25 as 2+2+5 = 9
add 1+9 = 10, treat it as 1+0 = 1
then compare that to the answer
7.75 as 7+7+5 = 19 as 1+9 = 10 as 1+0 =1
1 = 1, it doesn't prove you're right but odds are now 9 out 10 chance you did it right.
