Knowledge is Key
Totalitarianism is just another way of saying Dictatorship. Dictators who have the power to control the entire government and deprive people of their most basic rights will thrive in a nation whose people value comfort and security over their own independence and self reliance. So long as the dictator provides them with security and comfort the dictator can continue to have absolute rule over a nation. That fact that Industrial economy in 19th and 20th century Europe happened meant that a lot of people living within the cities, who lived as workers, began to accept Communism because it guaranteed them comfort and security in exchange for complete governmental control by the government redistributing wealth to the common class from the upper class while National Socialism Did the exact same thing by having the government control economic life to benefit the German masses within the cities by giving them subsidized vacations and jobs provided by the government as well as subsidized loans for houses so that the German people can live in security and comfort.
