You need to remember to distribute the -1 that is on the outside of the parentheses to the elements within the parentheses.
You get this
5p - 3 - p = 6p + 1
Combine the like terms on the left
4p - 3 = 6p + 1
To make things easier, commute the equation by switching the sides
6p + 1 = 4p - 3
Bring your 4p to the left by subtracting it from both sides
2p + 1 = -3
Subtract 1 from both sides
2p = -4
Now divide by 2 on both sides
p = -2
Always go back and make sure it works in the original equation
5(-2) - (3 + (-2)) = 6(-2) + 1
-10 - (3-2) = -12 + 1
-10 - 1 = -12 + 1
-11 = -11
