After Europe began to emerge from the dark ages the Roman Catholic Church had preserved reading, writing and other knowledge. Soon the church and wealthy patrons began to commission works of art. The Renaissance brought new ideas about art and architecture which emerged in Italy with those looking to the works and creations from ancient Rome. Many came to study in Italy and the ideas then spread to other countries. The art became more life like and realistic in painting and sculpture, also portraits of real people were commissioned. Subjects depicted ancient mythology, buildings became more ornate. The wealth of the church and nobility allowed this to flourish.
