You have one type of candy that sells for $5.00/lb and another type of candy that sells for $7.50/lb. You would like to have 15 lbs of a candy mixture that sells for $5.30/lb. How much of each candy will you need to obtain the desired mixture?

Let x and y be the weights of the two types of candy in pounds.

x+y=15 --> y = 15-x

5x + 7.50y = 15(5.30) = 79.50

5x + 7.50(15-x) = 79.50

5x + 112.5 - 7.50x = 79.50

2.50x = 33

x = 13.2 lbs

y = 15-x = 1.8 lbs
