Alexander was the son of King Phillip II of Macedonia. He became king in 336 BCE after the murder of his father. "The Great" follows his name because he was a military genius who perfected the "Phalanx" as well as a great diplomat. He was able to conquer all of the Greek islands, Persia, Egypt, India, and much of what is now-called the "near east."
Coupled to his military prowess, he spread Greek culture and ideas throughout his empire, ushering in what would be known as the "Hellenistic Age."
